eunomians Posted May 22, 2007 Report Share Posted May 22, 2007 MBW Patek Philippe Nautilus pictoral review I had been yearning and aching for a Patek Nautilus for many years. Every now and then, I would see one on display. Usually it was the first generation Nautilus from the mid-1970s that I would see (without the seconds hand). There was always something strange & mysterious about the look of the watch. I could never quite figure out what it was that made the watch so, well, oddly imbedded in my mind. I found the larger case size quite alluring, relative to most watches from times past, the Nautilus was a very large watch. Despite its large size, the Nautilus is very thin, consequently making it very elegant and dressy (and yes, it can be worn under a cuff). The weird bezel with a gasket in between that screws into the mid-case was unique, so was the 1 of a kind sculptured bezel. The integrated bracelet with the shiny and brushed surfaces was more of an extension of the watchcase as opposed to a 'bracelet'. And it was very haute-couture as far as styling goes in the 1970s. Gerald Genta was really on to something with this design. The watch looks somehow contemporary in the 2000s but it retains some sort of classic modern aesthetic(s) that make it look overall timeless. Ahhh, this is not surprising since it is a Patek! The overall fit & finish of this MBW is remarkable. Once again, it is up to par with MBW standards. The size, weight, execution of satin and shiny finishes are extraordinary. For the record, this is the Jumbo Nautilus, it is a large over 40mm in diameter (minus the crown) watch. This Nautilus is a nice match with my other MBW Patek Aquanaut. Once again, I would like to thank Paso for his excellent communication and very fast delivery. I think I have said too much already,.. just trying to save some members money.. however it would be a quite a wait so maybe it's best to let go if you have the funds to do so.. Seeking a cream face model myself, if I can get it in stainless with gold hands & markers on brown croc... don't know or really care about the accuracy of such a model,..Just would love to own one.. My other Patek, the Jumbo Aquanaut, is approx. 38mm (like OEM) but wears like a 40mm watch due to the bezel. It looks to be the same diameter as my genuine Rolex 1675. Large enough to be in style and small enough to be professional... What is the thickness ? If one owned a VC Overseas, a Nautilus Jumbo, a Royal Oak Jumbo,.... they would have three of a kind from the top three watchmakers in the world.... Though with my wrist size, the Royal Oak would have to be on leather, as the metal deployant is too long, which creates this corner along the bottom left edge of the band.. K- I managed to figure out a way to prevent this with my MBK Royal Oak Jumbo- I had the problem of either the clasp projecting out and creating a sharp bend on the 12:00 side of the bracelet, or some binding on the 6:00 side. So, what I did was contour the clasp at the hinge and remove one permanent link on the 6:00 side (with one removable link added on the 12:00 side). The result is perfect fit on my 6.75" wrist, and the clasp sits nice and flat along the bottom of my wrist. Maybe this would work for you as well... what does the back look like on the Jumbo Nautilus? Solid or Display? On the new 5711 and the rest of the new (genuine) line up, the watches are equipped with display backs. Older Jumbos along with the MBW/MBK rep have a solid back. As a matter of fact, the back on the rep is integral with the case; i.e. when you want to open up the watch, you have to do it from the bezel by removing the 4 screws projecting into the case hinges (or as some might call them, ears) and lift the entire bezel/crystal assembly off the case. I have a VC Overseas on its way. And I'm looking for a Royal Oak Jumbo.Fanatastic,.. nothing better than a 42mm automatic watch that's also very thin. This Overseas is my thinnest yet at 9.7mm which is the actual gen size as well, though you will read some web pages listing it incorrectly at 12mm. After going through the Pam craze, I have found these thinner variety, to be my personal sized best.. and I marvel at the ergonomic thin profile of this Overseas .. The 42mm gives them presence, while the profile gives them class.. Can't wait to get my hands on a Nautilus,.. and now also searching for a Jumbo Royal Oak.. Thanks ! George You are right,.. Gerald Genta designed the Royal Oak, and the Nautilus. He also designed the Iwc Ingenuier. Regarding your Overseas however... the 42mm version is already out..
